Maastricht Aachen Airport strengthens IT availability and security

A safe and reliable ICT environment is a prerequisite for airports to manage passenger and freight flows in a safe and reliable manner. This also applies to Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA), which normally has more than 16.000 flight movements per year and is strategically located in the heart of the Euregio.

About 200 people work directly for the airport. To give the IT environment a new impetus towards higher availability and better security, Ruud Willems, Head of Finance and IT at the airport, brought in IT service provider Xillion. “We are a 24-hour company in which the availability of data and applications must be as high as possible. In addition, we fulfill a vital function and we must comply with specific laws and regulations, for which audits also take place.”

Xillion proposed to increase availability and reliability by setting up a second data center, closednear the airport. Jean Huveneers, director of Xillion: “In addition to the on-premise environment at your own locationA second environment has been built up at the airport via Uniserver's IaaS platform in the Engie data center in Beek. We have been working with Uniserver for more than ten years when it comes to IaaS services. Because Uniserver takes care of all hardware, power and basic maintenance, we can fully focus on functionality for end customers.”

The on-premise environment is directly connected to the data center via redundant 10Gb lines, so that employees benefit from LAN speed when they access the external environment. This is possible if, for example, maintenance is required on the on-premise environment or if it is necessary to distribute the load between the two environments.

Benefits

Cyril Engels, IT manager at the airport, cites the greatly increased reliability as the most important short-term benefits. “If something goes wrong within the on-premise environment, the approximately 150 users can almost immediately switch to the secondary environment and continue working as usual. In the old situation we would have spent a lot of time restoring data. That is no longer necessary. Furthermore, security has increased significantly, partly due to the use of firewall clusters and very strong segmentation of the network. In this way we drastically reduce the risk of unauthorized access.”

According to Ruud Willems, the collaboration with Xillion and Uniserver has created a solid foundation for a robust and flexible IT environment that can continue to grow. “That flexibility already paid off in 2020 when we had to switch to working from home more. This could be organized relatively quickly with the new environment. Further available

We now have a solid foundation to further build on our IT environment in the future. There are still several steps planned for 2021, all of which are aimed at ensuring a stable, safe and available environment. Given our vital function within Dutch society, we cannot do without it.”

Founded in 1945 as a support airport for the Allies, Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA) is today the only regional airport in the Netherlands that transports passengers and freight.
