Performation en Uniserver joint seeking perfect balance between public and private cloud for hospitals

Dutch hospitals now operate in a dynamic environment more than ever. The demand for high-quality care continues to increase, which puts pressure on finances and employees.
The institutions therefore work hard to ensure that their business operations are as effective as possible, a good working environment and a patient-oriented service level. This requires a smart design of healthcare processes and an integrated, data-driven approach to business operations. Performation in Bilthoven helps hospitals with a portfolio of smart software that effectively supports them in daily management.
Performation and Uniserver are jointly looking for the perfect balance between public and private cloud for hospitals.
“We help hospitals optimize business operations using integrated strategic planning in combination with tactical monitoring and operational management,” says Marten de Bruin, IT and Operations manager at Performation. “We do this by offering several powerful tools, combined with top-quality advice. In this way, we enable objective, data-driven decision-making and optimize capacity management, so that healthcare professionals can provide the best possible care.” Performation supplies software for cost control and efficiency, budgeting, capacity management and care registration, among other things. With the Datagateaway developed in-house, healthcare data from all kinds of source systems can be read, collected and made available for analysis.
From colocation to IaaS
Performation has been working closely with Uniserver as a cloud partner for six years. “We had already switched to colocation before that,” says De Bruin. “When the desire arose to divest more and more of our own hardware and to look for a permanent data center partner, Uniserver came into the picture. We then started building our solutions in Uniserver's private cloud. Colocation decreased and the use of IaaS grew. Stability was always an important requirement. Availability and reliability are crucial for our customers and therefore also for us.”

Role of public cloud
One of the important topics for Performation in the coming years is the public cloud. The company wants to investigate the possibilities of bringing certain activities to Azure, for example, together with Uniserver. According to De Bruin, this is in line with what is currently happening in the healthcare world. “The public cloud was not an option for hospitals a few years ago. The concerns about availability and privacy were too great. There has been a shift in this recently. From a compliance perspective, there are no longer strong restrictions.
These currently mainly lie in licensing and technical limitations. We now use many Microsoft licenses within Uniserver's private cloud. Transferring this one-to-one to Azure is currently not feasible from a cost and technical perspective. That is why we are very pleased with the acquisition of CloudNation by Uniserver. As a new part of the Uniserver Group and a specialist in public cloud, they are the ideal party to help us find the right route to the public cloud. With their input, we can develop various scenarios in the coming years with regard to on-premise, IaaS, private and public cloud. It will be about the right balance for us and our customers.”
De Bruin has every confidence in the coming transition. “We have been working with Uniserver for six years and it has proven to be a real partner. We always have direct access to the technical people. The lines are short and Uniserver is not about rules and procedures but about solving problems. It is clear that the trend in the market is focused on the cloud. We will put a lot of energy into this with Uniserver and CloudNation in the coming years.”
Best offer
Due to various mergers and acquisitions, Performation at some point had to deal with different data center environments. When the contract with Uniserver was up for renewal in 2021, the software supplier took advantage of the opportunity to consolidate all IT to the Uniserver platform. De Bruin: “We did look around the market and invited various parties via an RFP. Uniserver ultimately turned out to offer the best offer in terms of price and performance. That is why a new three-year contract was signed at the end of 2021.”
