Public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud and multi-cloud, what are the main differences?

Public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud and multi-cloud, what are the main differences?
The choice for the cloud is often easy. It offers many options, but you also have the choice of different cloud models: public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud and multi-cloud. Each with its own advantages and disadvantages. That is why in this blog we look at the different models, what they can offer you and what the most important differences are. Which one suits your organization best? You can read it in this blog.
Public cloud
The public cloud is the most well-known form of cloud service. You use a shared online infrastructure together with other customers of your cloud service provider. This has the following advantages and disadvantages:
Benefits
Scalability: You can quickly scale up or down in resources.
Costs: You only pay for what you use, which usually means lower costs.
Maintenance: Your cloud service provider is responsible for managing and maintaining the infrastructure. This allows you to focus on your core activities.
Cons
Security risks: Cloud service providers often have advanced security measures in place, but there are still concerns about the security and privacy of the public cloud because your data is stored on shared servers.
Privacy risks: When you choose a provider from the United States, data is not always protected from prying eyes. If criminal activity is suspected, the US government may view data from servers on US territory.
Private cloud
Unlike the public cloud, you do not share the private cloud with other customers. This cloud form is specially designed for your organization. This way you work safely in the cloud.
Benefits
Enhanced security: A private cloud offers a higher level of security because the infrastructure is used exclusively by one organization.
Control: You have more control than with a public cloud. You can optimize the infrastructure based on your own requirements.
Better regulatory compliance: Self-managed infrastructure can be a solution for organizations dealing with regulations and compliance requirements. Are you looking for the best option to comply with local laws and regulations? Then look for a sovereign private cloud. A sovereign cloud is a cloud model specifically designed to comply with the laws and regulations of a particular country or territory. This includes not only how data is stored, but also how it is processed and managed under the jurisdiction of that region – an essential aspect for any organization handling sensitive data.
Cons
Higher costs: The investment for setting up a private cloud is higher.
Complex management: The private cloud is less flexible than a public or hybrid cloud.
Hybrid cloud
A hybrid cloud combines one or more public and private cloud solutions, possibly supplemented with an on-premise component. This gives you the opportunity to bring (the best) elements from multiple cloud types and on-premise together in one solution.
Benefits
Cost-effective: A well-designed hybrid cloud environment allows you to use the cloud in a cost-effective way. You only pay for the public part of the infrastructure when it is necessary.
Flexibility: A hybrid cloud offers the ability to move workloads between private and public clouds, allowing you to respond flexibly to changing needs and peak loads.
Cons
Complexity: Managing a hybrid cloud environment can be complex due to the different infrastructures and the need for integration and coordination between private and public clouds.
Increased risk: A hybrid cloud environment includes various sub-environments. Without a comprehensive overview, the risk of safety problems and incidents increases.
Multi-cloud
Another approach that has also gained popularity in recent years is multi-cloud. A multi-cloud can be a combination of public cloud solutions, but can also consist of different private cloud solutions or a mix of public and private cloud.
Benefits
Minimize risks: By using multiple cloud providers, you minimize the risk of outages or disruptions. If one provider experiences an outage, your operations can be seamlessly transferred to another provider, improving overall service availability.
Reduce vendor lock-in: Because you use services and solutions from multiple cloud providers, you do not have to deal with (too) great dependence on a supplier (vendor lock-in).
Cost and performance optimizations: Multi-cloud allows you to dynamically distribute workloads across different providers based on performance requirements and cost considerations. This allows you to achieve the best price-performance ratio for each specific workload.
Cons
Complexity of management: Managing multiple cloud environments requires advanced skills and tools. Integrating different platforms, enforcing security protocols, and managing data migrations between clouds can add significant complexity, resulting in increased operational costs and risks.
Public, private, hybrid or multi: what is the best choice?
Each cloud model offers its own features, advantages and disadvantages. The choice of the most suitable model largely depends on your organization and the nature of your business activities. For companies that value scalability, have little need for complexity and only occasionally store and process sensitive information, a public or multi-cloud can usually be sufficient.
However, if your organization regularly works with sensitive information and strives for maximum control, flexibility and security, a hybrid or private cloud is often more suitable.
